La Kunsthalle Mulhouse

La Kunsthalle is Mulhouse's contemporary art centre of national interest. Housed in la Fonderie, a building it shares with the Haute-Alsace University, it organises exhibitions and events founded on an interest in research and the production of works.

La Kunsthalle Mulhouse runs various types of residencies and, through its associations, is developing a model of collaboration with artists based on the long term.

CURATORIAL RESIDENCY PROGRAMME

Curators are hosted for a period of time during which they carry out research and meet local artists.

OBJECTIVES 

To introduce exhibition professionals to the Mulhouse art scene. To create a dialogue and meeting opportunities between Mulhouse artists and curators from other areas or countries.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

Variable. Accommodation is provided and travel expenses and fees covered.

DURATION

No contractual agreement.

RESIDENTS' COMMITMENTS

None.


YOUNG CREATION RESIDENCY

A residency designed to promote and support young artists.

OBJECTIVES

To give young artists their first professional experience of working and meeting people outside the area in which they grew up.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

— accommodation and a studio,
— a €3,000 grant,
— 2 return trips between their home and Mulhouse,
— support from the Kunsthalle team.

DURATION

A total of 2 months, spread out over the year.

This is a research residency, artists are not required to produce anything.

ACTIVITIES AIMED AT THE PUBLIC

None.


GLOBAL WORKSHOP RESIDENCY (Atelier Mondial

This is an international exchange and workshop programme offering artists from Basel, the canton of Solothurn, the South Baden area and Alsace the opportunity to live and work in a studio in one of the ten partner countries for several months.
At the same time, Atelier Mondial hosts foreign artists in the Upper Rhine area (Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg in Breisgau). Each year, Kunsthalle hosts a Mexican artist.

OBJECTIVES

To welcome a Mexican artist whose practice is related to textiles and whose project can be developed in Mulhouse and the surrounding area.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

— A studio and accommodation,
— a €10,000 grant.

DURATION

4 months in Mulhouse followed by 2 months in Basel.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applicants are shortlisted by the partners of the Textile Museum of Oaxaca in Mexico.

RESIDENTS' COMMITMENTS

To write a report which will be published on the Atelier Mondial website within one month of the end of their residency.


ASSOCIATE ARTISTS. WRITING ART

For one year, an artist is associated with La Kunsthalle's entire cultural programme. The selected artist will be asked to regularly write and make themselves available for various members of the local community. The programme is co-sponsored by the art centre and the literature, languages and humanities faculty at the Haute-Alsace University.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

— Accommodation,
— fees of €750 x 3 = €2,250
— 3 return trips between the artist’s home and Mulhouse (1 return trip per stay & 1 to be used by the artist to become acquainted with the area or for organisation of their exhibition),
— support from the Kunsthalle team.

DURATION

The residency is spread over Kunsthalle’s annual event period (September to July/August).

ARTIST-RESEARCHER

La Kunsthalle works with an artist who is developing a research project in conjunction with resources in Mulhouse. The art centre and the artist enter into a long-term collaboration involving periods of research, experimentation and production. Numerous partnerships are developed within the scope of these projects.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

— Accommodation and a studio,
— fees, the amount of which vary depending on the project,
— grant to cover production costs (the amount of which varies)
— return trips between the artist’s home and Mulhouse,
— support from the Kunsthalle team.

Activities vary depending on artists’ approaches to research and the steps they carry out in collaboration with partners. 

CONSIDERATION FOR RESIDENTS' FAMILY LIFE

Artists in residence are housed in a shared flat. Due to its location (on the premises of the local library), it is subject to occupancy rules that do not allow families to be accommodated.
